Heijmans charges up: First mobile charging station for electric equipment is now a reality
Published on Thursday 24 July 2025
The first deployment is at Schiphol Airport, where the charging plaza is being used for work on the Buitenveldert runway. There, a complete ‘asphalt train’ – asphalt spreaders, rollers, and adhesive trucks – runs entirely on electricity and is therefore emission-free. This requires a reliable power supply, which is provided by the DENS Powerhub.
And it doesn’t stop at Schiphol. This approach is scalable and applicable to all kinds of infrastructure projects throughout the Netherlands. From urban redevelopment to highway maintenance: wherever heavy equipment is needed, it is now possible to work emission-free, using a mobile battery container as a power source.
1.2 megawatt hours in a mobile housing
The mobile charging station, developed especially for Heijmans, consists of a DENS Powerhub battery system with a capacity of 1.2 megawatt hours (1200 kWh). That is enough power to supply the entire electric asphalt train with power, charge the electric company bus 17 times, or provide electricity for the site hut/office unit for 120 days.
Some of the electric equipment on the ‘asphalt train’ is equipped with interchangeable battery packs. Thanks to the six integrated CCS2 chargers and powerlock sockets, four interchangeable battery packs and four machines can be charged simultaneously. Charging takes place directly on site, without connection to the mains power supply – essential in places such as a runway, where no fixed power supply is available.
The entire charging station is mounted on a unique semi-trailer, which is equipped with an integrated truck-mounted crane with a separate battery pack at the rear. This allows the empty battery packs from the machines to be placed on the semi-trailer, charged there, and then – when they are full again – returned to the machines. This means that the charging station comes to the machines, rather than the other way around. This not only saves time, but also increases the efficiency and availability of the equipment on the construction site.
Smart, quiet, and immediately deployable
Peter Schellekens, equipment purchaser at Heijmans, puts it clearly:
“We bring the power to the construction site, instead of the other way around.” The effect is clear. Projects become more sustainable, efficient, and predictable. No more hassle with diesel generators or temporary connections. No CO₂ or nitrogen emissions. No noise.
For Heijmans, this charging station is not a one-off solution, but a logical step in a broader strategy. The company aims to eliminate CO₂ emissions in scope 1 and 2 by 2030. Where electric equipment is not yet available, Heijmans opts for HVO100, a sustainable diesel substitute. But where it is possible, the company chooses electric – and therefore also self-sufficient charging solutions such as this one.

DENS Powerhub
The DENS Powerhub is the beating heart of the mobile charging station. This advanced mobile battery storage system has been specially developed for applications in construction, infrastructure, and industry. The Powerhub delivers quiet, clean, and powerful energy to locations where no grid connection is available—completely emission-free.
The Powerhub has a modular design and is available in various sizes and capacities: from compact 5ft units to robust 20ft containers. Whether 300 kWh or 2.3 MWh is required, the design and technology remain consistent: robust, reliable, and safe. The systems are designed as mobile energy storage for intensive use in demanding environments, with high peak power and short charging times.
What really sets the Powerhub apart is its plug-and-play nature. The systems are ready for immediate use, without complicated installations or configurations. Thanks to its broad compatibility with existing charging technology – including CCS2 chargers, powerlock sockets, and AC connections – the Powerhub can be easily connected to virtually any type of electrical equipment.
Everything has also been thought of in terms of transport. The Powerhub has been designed with mobility in mind, so that it can be deployed quickly and move with the phases of a project. This makes the system particularly flexible – ideal for a variety of projects.
What this first really shows is that large-scale electric construction is doable. The tech is there. Companies like Heijmans are proving that vision, sustainability, and action can go hand in hand. The DENS Powerhub offers a powerful solution for anyone looking for a mobile battery, battery container, or temporary power solution for emission-free work.
At DENS, we are proud that our Powerhub plays a key role in this story and at this unique location. But more importantly, it demonstrates that emission-free construction really works. At Schiphol, and soon in many more places in the Netherlands.
