Energy Pilot with DENS Powerhubs: A Milestone at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport
At a location where reliability and timing are everything, TotalEnergies and international construction company Colas have specifically chosen the DENS Powerhub. Not because they had to, but to gain experience and insights: how does battery power perform in a critical environment like an airport?
During the renovation of Runway 1 at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, emission-free power is being used for the very first time. Two mobile DENS battery containers are delivering sustainable energy as part of an innovative pilot project, paving the way for large-scale adoption at other airports. Colas is carrying out the work on behalf of Groupe ADP, while the DENS Powerhubs keep construction logistics running smoothly.
Reliable Energy for an Airside Construction Site
Right next to the runway stands a large site compound where project teams eat, plan, and work. Grid power has been temporarily disconnected due to the scale of the renovation. One 20-ft DENS Powerhub (1,160 kWh, 300 kVA, with DC fast chargers) powers the entire compound, from lighting to HVAC and IT. Running low? The team simply swaps the unit. No downtime, no hassle.
The second Powerhub is mobile, moving across the site. This “runner” charges smaller battery packs at satellite compounds and work zones located along the runway. This keeps all crews operational, without temporary cable runs or noisy diesel generators. A dedicated charging station with a DC fast charger has been set up outside the airport for the Powerhubs. And if a unit happens to run out during a swap? A backup generator kicks in automatically. Continuity guaranteed.
From Theory to Practice
France does not impose emission requirements at this site. Still, this is a deliberate pilot: how does battery energy perform in terms of planning, safety, and reliability. Working airside is no easy task. You are involved in primary processes, subject to strict safety requirements and time constraints. Only one thing matters: reliability. DENS has already proven itself at the Dutch Schiphol Airport with construction company Heijmans. Now, TotalEnergies and Colas are taking the same step in France. The choice for two mobile 20-ft hook-lift containers with integrated DC chargers delivers exactly what’s needed on site: silent energy, flexible deployment, easy swapping, and instant scalability.
DENS as a Partner
DENS coordinated deployment with rental partners Fühler and Gebroeders Kok, handled commissioning, and provided on-site training. Day-to-day operations are managed by the construction consortium—as it should be on a tightly orchestrated project.
