Power supply like a Swiss army knife

Published on Thursday 05 December 2024

A few years ago, DENS appeared on the market as a pioneer in sustainable energy solutions. The hydrozine generator attracted a lot of attention, then came the Powerhub mobile battery systems. Behind the scenes, the young company is working on a third leg: DENS Powertrains, developed for manufacturers of construction and earthmoving machinery.

DENS continues to pioneer with Powertrains

Things are going fast for DENS, says director and founder Max Aerts. So fast, in fact, that it is already being considered to expand the business premises in Helmond, which was only moved into last year. This was already taken into account during completion, which is why a modular construction was assumed during construction. If necessary, a hall can be glued to it.

This modular character is characteristic of DENS, says Aerts. “In principle, all our energy solutions are structured in this way. The Powerhubs consist of a number of basic parts: The battery modules, the inverter and transformer, the user interface and charger(s). This allows us to vary endlessly, depending on the needs of the customer. This allows us to deliver customization with great freedom of configuration, while it is still a standard product at its core.”

Swiss army knife

Aerts shows a recent project by DENS: a Powerhub for ground, road and hydraulic engineering company Martens en Van Oord. For them, DENS built a mobile battery system with four CCS2 DC chargers, one of which was a water-cooled charger with a capacity of 360 kWin, a twenty-foot container. “We can make a customer-specific machine, but also a Swiss army knife,” Aerts outlines. “Because in addition to charging machines via the integrated charger, it is also possible to charge the mobile battery system via a CCS2 connection or powerlocks, you can also use this Powerhub to increase the grid connection in the event of grid congestion or to enter the imbalance market.”

Powertrains

In addition to the Powerhub and the hydrozine generator, DENS has developed a third branch. DENS Powertrains makes an OEM (Official Equipment Manufacturer) line of batteries that are built into machines by manufacturers themselves. “Here too, we make use of our strength, namely the modular nature of our batteries, which means that the DENS Powertrains can be installed as standard for all kinds of different machines.” For example, DENS has entered into a partnership with Fundex, manufacturer of foundation machines. More parties are interested. “The demand for battery modules as an alternative to combustion engines has become greater than we had thought,” says Aerts. “Technical developments are moving at lightning speed and what was unprofitable a few years ago is already daily practice”

Development

The hydrozine generator is at the basis of DENS, “Behind the scenes, we continue to develop it at a rapid pace. It is our ambition to base our Powertrains, which are currently still battery-based , on a mobile application of our hydrozine generator within a few years.” So there is work to be done, but they are not averse to that at DENS. “More than sixty percent of our work is based on development. We can make almost anything in-house. And we are looking for people, both for the production and service departments. Because our knowledge is our strength.”
